Biography

Maria Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987 in Nyagan, a town in western Siberia, where her parents, Yuri and Yelena, had fled from Belarus a year earlier to avoid radiation from Chernobyl. Still too close to the disaster site, her family left their home as refugees again when Maria Sharapova was two-years-old. In 1989, the Maria Sharapovas (Maria uses the feminine Sharapova) settled for a while in the Black Sea town of Sochi, known then as a resort village and home of Russian tennis light, Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Yuri had been an engineer in Nyagan. But as the family bounced from on home to the next, he did anything he could just to keep them together.

Recent Activities

Maria Sharapova then traveled to North America for the 2009 US Open Series. Maria Sharapova reached the quarterfinals in Stanford, losing to eventual finalist Venus Williams, and then had wins over Victoria Azarenka and Alona Bondarenko to reach the semi-finals in Los Angeles, losing to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta. Maria Sharapova then reached her first final since April 2008, at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, beating Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska en route. She lost in the final to Elena Dementieva. At the US Open, Maria Sharapova defeated Tsvetana Pironkova in the first round. Maria Sharapova then won convincingly against 17-year-old American Christina McHale in the second round. In the third round, she lost to 17-year-old Melanie Oudin. She may have been injured before or during this match, since she asked for evaluation and treatment of her right arm and shoulder by a trainer. During the match Sharapova called in the medic for a pain in her hand, which could suggest possible future difficulties with injury.

According to a blog on his website Quinton "Rampage" Jackson appears to be on his way out of the UFC.

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, one of Ultimate Fighting Championship’s most popular stars, says he has called it quits on his mixed-martial-arts career.

“I’m done fighting,” Jackson, a former UFC and Pride champion, wrote in a blog posting on his official website Tuesday.

“I still feel the UFC is a great organization and I felt like I was very loyal to them but they didn’t respect my loyalty but I wish the UFC the best. I did a lot of things for them. I wish no bad blood between us but I have kids & a family back in Memphis to provide for & thats all that matters to me!”

Jackson, 31, has been at the centre of controversy in recent weeks. He served as one of the coaches in the current season of UFC’s reality TV show The Ultimate Fighter, and was expected to face rival coach Rashad Evans at UFC 107 in December in Jackson’s hometown of Memphis.

UFC president Dana White went so far as to say that the Evans-Jackson match, built up by a dramatic season of The Ultimate Fighter, would be one of the most anticipated bouts in company history. But after Jackson accepted a role in the movie remake of The A-Team, he pulled out of the December date due to filming conflicts, drawing the ire of White, who said last month that he and Jackson weren’t speaking.

A source close to Jackson told MMAWeekly.com that Jackson said he wasn't going to fight for the UFC unless "they offered him a (explitive) of money."

Last month Jackson was heavily criticized by UFC President Dana White after it was announced he would be playing the role of B.A Baracus in the upcoming remake of the A-Team.

Justine Henin announces her return to tennis

The hot news for Tennis world is that Former world No. 1 Justine Henin has announced her return to competitive tennis for next year.

Justine Henin had been retired for just over a year, but at 27 Justine Henin again has the fire and physical strength to compete for an eighth Grand Slam title. Her announcement comes barely a week after Kim Clijsters capped her comeback from retirement with a second US Open title.

Her announcement on VTM television capped an about-face that went from her “definitive decision” to retire last year, to weeks of no comment to a smiling admission Tuesday that she truly missed the game too much.

She wants to play two exhibition tournaments, in Charleroi, Belgium, and Dubai, to hone her skills ahead of a competitive return next year with plans to compete in the next Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.

“The fire within burns again,” Justine Henin said. “I want to come back in January.”

Justine Henin officially retired on May 14, 2008, initially rejecting any thought of a comeback with a dogged determination that had come to mark her play throughout a decade-long career.

Serena Williams loses match for conduct violation

The bad news for Defending champion Serena Williams that she was charged with a point penalty on match point after yelling at a line judge for a calling a foot fault on her previous serve. The ruling gave Kim Clijsters a 6-4, 7-5 victory in their semifinal match, which had been delayed 32 hours because of rain.

After the line judge called the foot fault with Serena serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, the youngest Williams sister intimidatingly stared her down before screaming at the official with a jabbed finger. After a few seconds, Serena turned back around to serve, thought better of it and resumed the badgering. The chair umpire then called over the line judge to ask what Serena had said, rules officials were summoned, a brief summit occurred at the net and it was determined that Serena would be assessed a point penalty for a conduct violation. The point gave Clijsters the match.

The initial foot fault that began the fireworks was a terrible call. It was unconscionable. It cannot be made at the end of any match, let alone in the semifinals of the U.S. Open. This isn't because a foot fault is a ridiculous call at that juncture (even though it is). It's because it wasn't a foot fault. The replays show that Serena's foot was behind the line when she served. You could make the argument that it was close but not close enough to make the call.

That being said, that's no excuse for Serena to berate an official. Wrong as the official may have been, there's a line that to be crossed and Serena did it pretty early on in her diatribe by saying, "I'm going to shove this ball down your f------ throat".

"It's that tennis player," one teenage girl yelled to another as she whipped out her cell phone to take a picture. "The little one. The one that beat Sharapova."

Tourists and passers-by began to gather on 43rd St. Photographers jostled to get a shot of the new teenaged sensation who had just knocked out a former U.S. Open champion. Tourists and photographers jostled and yelled as everyone seemed to call her name from every direction.

The 5-foot-6 Melanie Oudin smiled nervously until the photographers began to push and shove each other. She was whisked away to a waiting car.

"It wasn't really scary. It was just really weird," Oudin said. "They all seemed to know me. It was just weird."

In the span of five hours, on the same court at Arthur Ashe Stadium in fourth-round matches, the hunt for another women's U.S. Open championship took completely different turns for the Williams sisters.

Under a bright, sunny late morning sky Serena Williams breezed through an easy two-set match, beating Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. Later under a cloudy gray sky with a wicked wind whipping around the stadium, Venus Williams, gimpy with tendinitis in her heavily wrapped left knee, lost to Kim Clijsters, 6-0, 0-6, 6-4. That derailed a possible semifinals showdown between the Williams sisters, who were in the same half of the women's bracket.

Williams missed several easy shots, but she seemed to be fighting fate much of the afternoon. Clijsters, who is returning from a two-year hiatus after having a child, became the first wild card entry to reach the women's quarterfinals.

As much as Venus Williams was fighting fate (and a debilitating injury), Serena Williams is operating on a tennis version of Manifest Destiny. Through her first three matches Serena Williams has crushed all the opponents in her path on the way to the quarterfinals and is looking at expanding her grand slam championships to three this year. Serena Williams has already conquered the Australian Open and Wimbledon. And with the No. 1 (Dinara Safina), No. 3 (her sister Venus) and No. 4 (Elena Dementieva) and No. 5 (Jelena Jankovic) seeds out, Serena, the No. 2 seed, becomes the heavy favorite to cruise to a fourth U.S. Open title.

Taylor Dent - who only a couple of years ago was told Taylor Dent might never walk again, let alone take such a triumphant jog - went 4hours and 13 minutes on the Grandstand to outlast Ivan Navarro of Spain, 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (1), 7-5, 7-6 (9), in a second-round matchup of serve-and-volleyers that turned into the most captivating match of the tournament.

When it was over, Taylor Dent simply couldn't contain his joy, grabbing the chair umpire's microphone and telling the crowd, "I just want to say you guys are unbelievable, I love you. Let's go!"

They are going together into the third round of the Open, where Dent will meet the No. 2 ranked player in the world, Andy Murray, with all of the fans and none of the odds in his corner.

"My voice is hoarse, I'm so excited," Taylor Dent said on the court afterward as the crowd chanted "USA! USA!" "It wasn't the prettiest match, but my grit got me through today."

Today, Friday, for three years, his grit has seen him through, if not to the top of the tennis world. The Newport Beach, Calif., product once was considered one of the great American hopes in men's tennis, charted on a course alongside Andy Roddick and learning under the tutelage of Pete Sampras. He reached as high as the No. 21 ranking before beginning to suffer back pain so excruciating that hanging a picture in his house would knock him down for hours.

Three surgeries on his back cost him most of the last three years of his career and left him bedridden all day for up to eight months at a time. He was told to forget tennis, and that the broken vertebra that was threatening the nerves at the base of his back might land him in a wheelchair.

Reporting from New York - When Andy Roddick saved three match points against John Isner, he did it from the bottom of his feet. Andy Roddick rose up, lifted up and pounded out service aces.

But then there was a fourth match point, and the start of that point belonged to the 24-year-old John Isner, a 6-foot-9 former NCAA champion who has been sick with mononucleosis this summer and who was starting to cramp.

John Isner didn't serve an ace. It took one hour and 21 minutes for Isner to win the first two sets and 1:36 for Roddick to win the next two. Isner may be the first underdog to have gathered so little support at Ashe Stadium, but the large majority of the crowd was firmly in Roddick's corner. So was momentum going into that final set.

"Any time somebody comes back from two sets, momentum is certainly on your side," Roddick said. "In the fifth set I knew I wanted to finish it before it got to the tiebreaker and kind of became a shootout."

Andy Roddick had statistical reason to fear the tiebreaker. Coming into the match, Isner had won 14 of the 15 tiebreakers he had played.

Even if, as Andy Roddick said, he had come into this tournament with a huge sense of confidence, sometimes there is nothing to be done against a large, tall guy who keeps hitting big serves and rushing the net.

John Isner missed both the French Open and Wimbledon because of his illness, and he said he felt fatigue in the fifth set against Roddick.

Next up for the former Georgia Bulldog will another physical challenge.

High School Football : New Underwood runs past Kadoka for win

Its great news for all Prep: football.So,lets see...
Alex Anderson scored three touchdowns and Garrett Whipple added two as New Underwood downed Kadoka, 32-14, in the season opener for both teams Friday.

Whipple opened the scoring by getting into the end zone twice in the first quarter. His first score came on a 17-yard run, and that was followed up by a 31-yard scamper to put the Tigers up 14-0 after one quarter.

Kadoka would narrow the gap to eight points when Colter Stout found Kenar VanderMay for a 17-yard pitch-and-catch before halftime. Vandermay would score again to open up the second half finding the end zone from 21 yards out.

New Underwood would respond with the final three scores as Anderson hauled in a 15-yard scoring strike and ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Whipple ended the night with 129 yards on the ground and Anderson had 102. Whipple added 12 tackles on defense for the Tigers, while the Kougars were led by Chance Knutson’s 13.

CROW CREEK 12, CHEYENNE-EAGLE BUTTE 8: Crow Creek scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to down Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, 12-8, on Friday.

Keenan World Turner returned a kickoff 80 yards to pull his team within two points and with seven minutes to go in the quarter, Vilas Fallis Jr. found Roger Bishop for a 2-yard touchdown pass.

C-EB scored on a Cody Neigel 2-yard strike to Malcom Guest, and the defense recorded a safety.

Crow Creek is now 1-1 on the season, while the Braves fall to 0-1.

The first week of the Open is almost over and yet Murray has still only played two matches. Today he will play his third – against Taylor Dent – and begin a gruelling run-in towards the sharp end of the tournament. If he is to repeat his run of last year and reach the final, he must play five, best-of-five set matches in eight days. It is a mad schedule for a tournament that is run – officially – over 14 days.But yet has a potential to reach the final before Andy Murray.

ANDY MURRAY'S POTENTIAL ROUTE TO THE FINAL

THIRD ROUND: ANDY MURRAY VS TAYLOR DENT

The American wild card, ranked 195 in the world, beat Spain's Ivan Navarro in a fifth-set tie-break to make the third round. Murray has met the 28-year-old twice, and won on both occasions.

FOURTH ROUND:ANDY MURRAY VS MARIN CILIC

The 16th seed had to show his battling qualities in the second round to come from two sets down to overcome Jesse Levine 4-6, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0. Murray has faced the Croatian three times on three different surfaces and remains undefeated.

QUARTER-FINAL: ANDY MURRAY VS JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO

The Argentine sixth seed, pictured left, stayed on course for a quarter-final meeting with Murray after a three-set win over Jurgen Melzer, although his performance was inconsistent. The 20-year-old was pushed all the way in a first set lasting more than an hour before winning 8-6 on a tie-break.

Murray leads the Argentine 4-1 in head-to-heads.

SEMI-FINAL: ANDY MURRAY VS RAFAEL NADAL

Still on the road to full fitness after the knee problems that ruled him out of Wimbledon, Nadal held off a spirited challenge from world No.129 Nicolas Kiefer in the second round. Nadal will play 32nd seed Nicolas Almagro in the third round.

Although Murray trails 7-2 in head-to-heads, he will be buoyed by his US Open semi-final win over Nadal last year.

FINAL: ANDY MURRAY VS ROGER FEDERER

Murray lost out to the formidable Swiss here last year, but the world No.2 leads Federer 6-3 in head-to-heads, with all nine matches taking place on hard courts.

US Open 2009 - Roger Federer vs Juan Martin Del Potro be the best Final?

When you look at the men's singles draw, there is hardly a player that can reasonably be expected to stop Roger Federer before the final. Juan Martin Del Potro can be the deserved man in US open to beat Roger Federer .

Roger Federer beat Lleyton Hewitt earlier today in 4 sets to reach the round of 16 and you have to put the Swiss Maestro into the quarters as he will be a huge favorite against either James Blake or Tommy Robredo. After that Roger Federer would draw either Robin Soderling or Nikolay Davydenko and neither of those two players can actually be looking forward to that projected quarterfinal match as they are a combined 0-23 against Federer lifetime, regardless of event or surface.

Even if Andy Roddick can get past John Isner and then Fernando Verdasco (Roddick is down two sets to Isner at time of writing) you still would never, ever call Roddick to beat Federer because Roger has always been the American's major nemesis. Time after time after time, Roddick has fallen to Federer, often in huge matches, as the American only has 2 life time wins against Federer.......in 21 matches played.

The only player that looks good enough to stop Roger Federer before the 2009 US Open final is Novak Djokovic, but he will be in tough just to make the semis with Verdasco at the top of his game and in the same part of the draw. Even if he does make it that far however,Roger Federer beat Djokovic just a couple weeks ago in the Cincy final and he, Federer, looked great doing it. Novak Djokovic would have a chance in the projected match based on his hardcourt abilities but he would still be a significant underdog based on Federer's play over the years in Flushing Meadows.

On the other side of the draw you have to like Juan Martin Del Potro's draw, at least to the quarters. Juan Martin Del Potro is going against no-name Daniel Koellerer next and then he will play the winner of Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gilles Simon. Neither of those two players looks good enough to beat Del Potro, even though Simon is ranked 9th on tour.

From the quarters to the final, Juan Martin Del Potro would likely face Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal with Murray being the biggest hang up. Juan Martin Del Potro has a recent victory over Nadal, who has never made a US Open final, and a few weeks ago Juan Martin Del Potro looked like he was going to take Murray out in the Canadian final before fatigue ruined his game. With the easy draw Del Potro has to the quarters, you have to think that he will still be fresh if he plays the Scot in Flushing Meadows this year and that could spell trouble for Murray.

Federer, Djokovic in fourth round at U.S. Open

The five-time champion Roger Federer beat Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday to reach the fourth round at the U.S. Open. Former runner-up Novak Djokovic joined the amazing Federer in the round of 16.

The world No. 1 Roger Federer dropped the first set against the 31st-seeded Hewitt before charging back for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 decision at Ashe Stadium.Roger Federer beat Hewitt in the 2004 final on the grounds of the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.

Roger Federer got past Hewitt despite piling up an uncharacteristic 59 unforced errors, which was 22 more than the 2001 champion Hewitt.

The 15-time major champion Roger Federer advanced in 2 hours, 33 minutes with the help of 15 aces among his 51 winners, while Lleyton Hewitt settled for 26 winners in the setback. The Swiss great also tallied two more service breaks (5-3) than his Aussie counterpart.

Roger Federer, who is also the reigning Wimbledon and French Open champ, has now beaten Hewitt in their last 14 matchups, dating back to 2004, and is 16-7 lifetime against the fiery Aussie.

The former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam event champion Lleyton Hewitt has been climbing back up in the rankings after undergoing hip surgery last summer.

The 28-year-old Roger Federer, who hasn't lost here since 2003, beat Britain's Andy Murray in last year's Big Apple finale. The sublime Swiss will meet 14th- seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo or 21st-seeded American James Blake in the round 16.

The fourth-seeded Djokovic was tested mightily by American qualifier Jesse Witten before prevailing in 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 fashion at Armstrong Stadium. The 26-year-old Witten needed a wild card to get into the qualifying here and had never won an ATP-level match before going 2-1 this week.

Novak Djokovic got past Witten in 3 hours, 28 minutes with the help of a whopping nine service breaks. The surprising Witten tallied six breaks in a losing effort. Unfortunately for Witten, who notched 11 more winners than his Serbian counterpart (42-31), he piled up 11 double faults on Day 6.

The former Aussie Open champion Novak Djokovic was the 2007 runner-up here to Federer.

Up next for Djokovic will be 15th-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek, who came back to best 23rd-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. The Top-16 seeds in the draw are now a perfect 35-0 this week.

Two-time U.S. Open semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko cruised into the fourth round with a 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Swiss Marco Chiudinelli. The Russian Davydenko, seeded eighth this year, reached the final four here in 2006 and 2007.

The third round is scheduled to conclude here on Sunday, including matches for the 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Murray and former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal. The second-seeded Murray will meet American Taylor Dent, while a third-seeded Nadal, the reigning Australian Open titlist, will encounter 32nd-seeded fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Also on Sunday, sixth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro will take on Austrian Daniel Koellerer and seventh-seeded former Aussie Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be opposed by fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

American Melanie Oudin stuns Sharapova at U.S. Open

American teenager Melanie Oudin pulled off straightly upstart of a Russian star, as Maria Sharapova was ousted by the Georgia native in Saturday's third-round action at the U.S. Open.

"I don't even know what to say right now," Melanie Oudin said, choking back tears in her postmatch interview in Arthur Ashe Stadium. "Thank you so much for cheering for me."
Maria Sharapova, who has won this tournament once, usually gets those cheers. But on this cloudless day in Queens, the fans were rooting for a new potential queen — the one who stamped the word "Believe" on her shoes, but probably didn't see this coming so soon.
"My goal was to make the top 50," Melanie Oudin said. "But if I keep playing like this, who knows? Hopefully, I can get as high as anything."
Melanie Oudin added this upset to one over No. 4 Elena Dementieva in the second round and a win over former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic this year at Wimbledon.
Her confidence is growing as quickly as her resume, and suddenly, it does seem like anything is possible.

Gritting her way through a shaky third set, the 70th-ranked player from Marietta, Ga., pulled off her second upset of the Open on Saturday, defeating a more-seasoned, more-famous, more-moneyed opponent — 29th-seeded Maria Sharapova, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The three-time major champion Sharapova captured a U.S. Open title back in 2006.


Maria Sharapova had little trouble with Oudin in the opening set on Saturday, but the young American fought back and captured the second set on her seventh set point to surprise Sharapova and force a third and deciding stanza.

In the final set, Maria Sharapova saved six break points to pull within 2-3 and then summoned a trainer to work on her right arm. The Russian superstar Maria Sharapova sidelined for more than 10 months because of a right shoulder injury that wound up requiring surgery last year. She returned to the tour earlier this season.

In the first game following Sharapova's injury timeout, Melanie Oudin broke for a 4-3 edge. And then following several more breaks of serve on either side, Oudin found herself serving for the match at 6-5 and converted on her first match point with a forehand winner into a wide-open court.

The Marietta native Oudin broke into tears as she moved into the second week here for the first time in her blossoming career. The upstart American also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this summer by shocking former top- ranked star Jelena Jankovic.

Maria Sharapova imploded for 21 double faults and had her once-powerful serve broken eight times. Oudin was also broken on eight occasions in the 2-hour, 58-minute battle.

Melanie Oudin's fourth-round opponent will be another Russian, 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova, who was an easy 6-4, 6-1 victor against 21st-seeded Chinese Zheng Jie on Day 6 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.

New underwear league in debate

The new underwear League, which opens its debut season on Friday is facing a debate but the underwear-clad female players are hoping, however -- probably in vain -- to be taken seriously.

The LFL, born out of the commercial success of the "Lingerie Bowl', a half-time show of women in scanty outfits broadcast during the half-time break in the NFL's Super Bowl, has ten teams competing in seven-a-side full-contact American football, with players dressed in sports bras and the tiniest of shorts.

The branding is blatant -- the teams have names such as the San Diego Seduction, Dallas Desire and Los Angeles Temptation -- and their websites and promotional material are more akin to those for NFL cheerleaders than genuine professional sports.

The league's founder Mitch Mortaza has described the venture as "Disneyland for football fans" but those taking part say they are serious about the sport and about winning.

"I think it is eye candy for one but it is also football and it is real," says Kaley Tuning, wide-receiver with the Miami Caliente who open the season on Friday at the Chicago Bliss.

"There were try outs for the team and if you couldn't play you didn't make the cut," she said.

"I've seen people say it is a joke and it is degrading and it makes me mad. We are real athletes, for them to not take us seriously, well I say wait till you see us play," she added.

Watching the Caliente practice, at a sports facility in the suburbs of Miami under the charge of former college football quarterback Bob Hewko, the strange clash of glamour girls and sport is quickly evident.

The training is taken seriously and the players work hard and look intense in the huddle but a Gucci handbag takes its place alongside the helmets on the sideline and one player, who like many is also a model, worries that she has picked up scratches ahead of photo shoot in a few days' time.

Hewko concedes that looks played a major part in the selection of the squad but, like everyone involved in the venture, says fans will see real football.

"I was surprised at the level -- the level of talent. They can run, they can catch and we have a quarterback that can throw the football 60 yards," he said.

It is unlikely to be the throwing prowess of the players that brings in the punters to the indoor arenas, however.

"For the first game, it is going to be people wanting to have a good time, wanting to see beautiful women playing football and getting down and dirty," said Miami's defensive captain Taira Turley, who is also a professional make-up artist.

Winning night of Federer and Serena

Under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Federer defeated Simon Greul of Germany in a slightly more difficult way that was unexpected at 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.

Federer will play Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday in the third round. Hewitt beat Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-3, 6-6, 6-4. Federer is 15-7 against Hewitt and has won their last 13 encounters. Roger Federer has stretched his U.S. Open winning streak to 36 matches by reaching the third round.Federer is trying to become the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win the American Grand Slam tournament 6 years in a row.Next up for Federer: a match against 2001 U.S. Open champion Lleyton Hewitt.





In another late match, No. 2 Serena Williams was pretty close to perfect in beating 51st-ranked Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour.Also yesterday, Venus Williams moved on, Rafael Nadal came back and Marat Safin said goodbye.

Her left knee heavily wrapped, the third-seeded Williams defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 6-4, 6-2, in a less taxing match than she had 2 nights earlier when she fell behind a set before rallying against Vera Dushevina.

"I'm still playing well and I feel I'll continue to play better as the rounds go on," she said. "I'm trying not to make this injury a factor at all."

Breaking with tradition, the Federer match was played first at Arthur Ashe Stadium ahead of the women’s match, in which Serena Williams routed Melinda Czink of Hungary, 6-1, 6-1 in 53 minutes.It was the first time the sexes had switched starting times since 1986, when a match featuring Jimmy Connors was played before a women’s match headlined by Gabriela Sabatini. The United States Tennis Association is expected to have at least one more card in which the men play first.

“Seems like it was a success so far,” Federer said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

But whether playing first, second, day or night, it mattered not to Greul, who was ranked 65th in the world entering the tournament and as low as 208th a year ago.After a listless first set, Greul played more aggressively, attacking Federer’s serve and forcing him to fight off two set points on his serve before Federer held and broke Greul in the 11th game. Federer hit three consecutive backhand slices and then changed the pace with a topspin backhand, following it up with a wicked forehand winner.

Federer won the match in 1 hour 58 minutes. As Greul walked off the court, he was cheered warmly by the 24,206 fans, a night session record.Greul said that because of the circumstances — playing against the world’s best player on center court at night — he could take more out of the loss than some of his victories.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “I’m really happy how it worked.”

The Hewitt-Chela match did not expose lingering rifts between the players. Chela once spit in the direction of Hewitt at the Australian Open. They amiably shook hands when it was over.
