Biography

Maria Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987 in Nyagan, a town in western Siberia, where her parents, Yuri and Yelena, had fled from Belarus a year earlier to avoid radiation from Chernobyl. Still too close to the disaster site, her family left their home as refugees again when Maria Sharapova was two-years-old. In 1989, the Maria Sharapovas (Maria uses the feminine Sharapova) settled for a while in the Black Sea town of Sochi, known then as a resort village and home of Russian tennis light, Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Yuri had been an engineer in Nyagan. But as the family bounced from on home to the next, he did anything he could just to keep them together.

Recent Activities

Maria Sharapova then traveled to North America for the 2009 US Open Series. Maria Sharapova reached the quarterfinals in Stanford, losing to eventual finalist Venus Williams, and then had wins over Victoria Azarenka and Alona Bondarenko to reach the semi-finals in Los Angeles, losing to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta. Maria Sharapova then reached her first final since April 2008, at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, beating Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska en route. She lost in the final to Elena Dementieva. At the US Open, Maria Sharapova defeated Tsvetana Pironkova in the first round. Maria Sharapova then won convincingly against 17-year-old American Christina McHale in the second round. In the third round, she lost to 17-year-old Melanie Oudin. She may have been injured before or during this match, since she asked for evaluation and treatment of her right arm and shoulder by a trainer. During the match Sharapova called in the medic for a pain in her hand, which could suggest possible future difficulties with injury.

According to a blog on his website Quinton "Rampage" Jackson appears to be on his way out of the UFC.

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, one of Ultimate Fighting Championship’s most popular stars, says he has called it quits on his mixed-martial-arts career.

“I’m done fighting,” Jackson, a former UFC and Pride champion, wrote in a blog posting on his official website Tuesday.

“I still feel the UFC is a great organization and I felt like I was very loyal to them but they didn’t respect my loyalty but I wish the UFC the best. I did a lot of things for them. I wish no bad blood between us but I have kids & a family back in Memphis to provide for & thats all that matters to me!”

Jackson, 31, has been at the centre of controversy in recent weeks. He served as one of the coaches in the current season of UFC’s reality TV show The Ultimate Fighter, and was expected to face rival coach Rashad Evans at UFC 107 in December in Jackson’s hometown of Memphis.

UFC president Dana White went so far as to say that the Evans-Jackson match, built up by a dramatic season of The Ultimate Fighter, would be one of the most anticipated bouts in company history. But after Jackson accepted a role in the movie remake of The A-Team, he pulled out of the December date due to filming conflicts, drawing the ire of White, who said last month that he and Jackson weren’t speaking.

A source close to Jackson told MMAWeekly.com that Jackson said he wasn't going to fight for the UFC unless "they offered him a (explitive) of money."

Last month Jackson was heavily criticized by UFC President Dana White after it was announced he would be playing the role of B.A Baracus in the upcoming remake of the A-Team.

Justine Henin announces her return to tennis

The hot news for Tennis world is that Former world No. 1 Justine Henin has announced her return to competitive tennis for next year.

Justine Henin had been retired for just over a year, but at 27 Justine Henin again has the fire and physical strength to compete for an eighth Grand Slam title. Her announcement comes barely a week after Kim Clijsters capped her comeback from retirement with a second US Open title.

Her announcement on VTM television capped an about-face that went from her “definitive decision” to retire last year, to weeks of no comment to a smiling admission Tuesday that she truly missed the game too much.

She wants to play two exhibition tournaments, in Charleroi, Belgium, and Dubai, to hone her skills ahead of a competitive return next year with plans to compete in the next Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.

“The fire within burns again,” Justine Henin said. “I want to come back in January.”

Justine Henin officially retired on May 14, 2008, initially rejecting any thought of a comeback with a dogged determination that had come to mark her play throughout a decade-long career.

EARLY LIFE:

* Born on June 1, 1982 in Liege, Belgium. She turned professional in 1999 and won her first WTA title in Antwerp.

* The 1.67 metre tall Henin, gifted with a breath-taking single-handed backhand which John McEnroe rated as the best in tennis, captured 41 singles titles, including seven grand slams during her career.

SOME FIRSTS:

* Henin became first Belgian to reach a singles final at Wimbledon in 2001, where she was beaten by Venus Williams. She also went on to become the first Belgian to win a grand slam title when she overwhelmed compatriot Kim Clijsters to win the 2003 French Open.

* Overcame Clijsters to win her second grand slam title at the U.S. Open in 2003 and then again in the 2004 Australian Open final.

* Won a gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics despite being plagued by an energy-sapping viral illness.

* Won the French Open in 2005 and 2006, only the fifth woman to win back-to-back Roland Garros titles in the professional era.

* Reached the final of all four grand slam tournaments in 2006, becoming the first player to achieve such a feat and reach the final of the end-of-season Championships since Steffi Graf in 1993.

MARRIAGE BREAK-UP AND RETIREMENT:

* Began 2007 by missing the Australian Open to deal with the breakdown of her four-year marriage to Pierre-Yves Hardenne, but went on to win her third consecutive French Open in May with victory over Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.

* Won grand slam title number seven with victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova for her second U.S. Open trophy.

* Ended season by beating Maria Sharapova 5-7 7-5 6-3 in an epic final lasting three hours and 24 minutes to win her second consecutive WTA Championships.

* Started off the 2008 season with victory in Sydney but she was soundly beaten by Sharapova in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. After picking up her final title in Antwerp, she failed to advance past the quarter-finals of her last three tournaments.

* On May 14, 2008, still ranked number one in the world, Henin announced her retirement with immediate effect at a press conference. The timing of her retirement was totally unexpected since her favourite tournament, the French Open, was less than two weeks away and as the 2007 champion she would have been expected to defend her title.

* On Sept 22, 2009, she announced her return to competitive tennis after spending 16 months out of the sport.
